This is a photo album dedicated to the famous Anabaptist sect whose old-fashioned agrarian way of life has made it the object of scorn, admiration, and sentimentality throughout the twentieth century. After a brief introductory discussion of the Amish life-style, it pictorially surveys the sect's communities throughout the U.S. There are Amish in every non-New England northeast state, throughout the Midwest, as far west as Oklahoma and Montana, and, skipping over the Old South, in Texas and Florida. Yoder and Kelly's photos--all exterior shots--are sharp, detailed, sometimes almost painfully intense in their colors. Yet although their blues and reds can scorch the eye, they are gorgeous, just the sort of imagery--buggies on dirt roads, men and boys following horse drawn plows, a succession of barn-raising shots--that will make bucolic romanticists swoon. ~--Ray Olson
